One of oldest Russian cities (903 AD), authentic medieval atmosphere, incredible churches, Mirozhsky Monastery frescoes (oldest in Russia), very cheap, not touristy.

Lastochka high-speed train: 3-4 hours (from $5!). Bus: 4-5 hours. Very easy day trip or weekend from SPb.

Yes, 50km to border! But crossing requires Schengen visa. City itself is safe, no border issues for tourists staying in Russia.

May-September for warm weather. Winter is cold but atmospheric with snow on ancient churches. Avoid November (grey and rainy).

Pskov Kremlin (Krom) is one of oldest in Russia - walls up to 6m thick! Free to enter grounds.

Trinity Cathedral inside Kremlin has stunning icons. Birthplace of Princess Olga - first Christian ruler.

Pskov school of icon painting is famous - unique style different from Moscow. See at local museum.

Mirozhsky Monastery has 12th century frescoes - oldest preserved in Russia!

Day trip to Izborsk fortress (30km) and Pechorsky Monastery (50km) - both spectacular.

Very close to Estonian border - but crossing requires proper visa. Don't attempt without documents.

One of cheapest cities in Russia! Budget travelers paradise. Authentic, not touristy.
