faq.subtitle Palenque
December-April is dry season with better weather. Early morning (8AM at opening) is ideal to avoid heat and crowds. Bring water and insect repellent.
3-4 hours for main sights. For a full day, add the museum and jungle trail walks. The site is large with lots of walking on uneven terrain.
ADO buses depart hourly from Villahermosa airport and bus station. 2.5 hours, around 300 pesos. Or hire a private taxi (about 2000 pesos).
Not required but recommended. Local guides (600-1000 pesos for 2h) explain Maya history and inscriptions wonderfully. Available at entrance.
Two options: town (cheaper, more restaurants) or ruins road (quieter, jungle setting). La Canada is popular area in town with cafes and bars. Jungle lodges offer unique experience.
Useful tips for visiting Palenque
Bring insect repellent and plenty of water - the site is in humid rainforest with mosquitoes. Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
Book bus tickets in advance during high season (December-January). Seats fill up quickly. ADO website accepts foreign cards.
Site opens 8AM-5PM (last entry 4:30PM). Arriving early ensures cooler air, fewer crowds, and better chance of wildlife sightings.
Use colectivo (25 pesos) instead of taxi (100 pesos) from town to ruins. Same time, third of the price. They depart from Av. Allende near ADO station.
Don't feed the coatis (raccoon-like animals) even though they're cute. They can bite and may carry diseases. Also watch for howler monkeys in trees.
Palenque combines well with San Cristobal de las Casas and Agua Azul waterfalls for a Chiapas circuit. Many tours connect these destinations.
