Best times are autumn (October-November) for colorful foliage and spring (April-May) for cherry blossoms. July-August is very rainy.
Tobu train from Asakusa (2 hrs, 2800 yen round trip) or JR Shinkansen via Utsunomiya (1.5 hrs). Nikko World Heritage Pass 3000 yen.
Yuba (tofu skin) — traditional monks food. Soba (buckwheat noodles). Try yuba soba, yuba tempura, and yuba ramen.
Entry 1600 yen adults, 550 yen children. Combo ticket with National Treasure Museum 2100 yen. Hours: 8-17 (Apr-Oct), 8-16 (Nov-Mar).
Hotels and large restaurants accept Visa/Mastercard. Small shops and local vendors prefer cash. Carry cash with you. ATMs available at convenience stores.
Useful tips for visiting Nikko
Buy Nikko World Heritage Pass (3000 yen) — includes train from Asakusa and local buses for 2 days.
Carry cash — many small shops and traditional restaurants do not accept cards.
Try yuba — local specialty made from tofu skin. Yuba soba and yuba tempura are must-try dishes.
Wear comfortable walking shoes — heritage sites require stair climbing and walking on gravel.
Avoid weekends in autumn season — very crowded. Weekdays are much better.
Kegon Falls: viewing from top is free. Elevator to lower platform (best view) 600 yen.
Do not tip — tipping is not customary in Japan and may be considered rude.
Bring rain gear — Nikko is a rainy area, especially from June to September.
