faq.subtitle Meteora
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal. Summer can be hot (30°C+), winter cold with possible snow on rocks.
6 monasteries are open: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Rousanou, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, St. Nicholas Anapausas. Entry €3 each.
Shoulders and knees must be covered. Wraps/skirts available at entrance for women. No shorts or short skirts allowed.
Train: 4-5 hours to Kalambaka (€25-40). Bus: 5 hours (€30). Car: 4 hours via E75 highway. Book train tickets on Trainose.
Difficult but possible. Better 2 days: 3 monasteries per day plus sunset viewpoint. Each monastery has different closing days - check schedule.
Not necessary but convenient. Alternatives: guided tours (€25-40), taxi (€50-80/day), local buses, or hiking trails between monasteries (challenging but scenic).
Useful tips for visiting Meteora
Start early (8am) to avoid crowds and heat. Most monasteries open at 9:00. Sunset views are spectacular from observation points.
Wear comfortable walking shoes - many stairs and uneven rocks. Bring water bottle. Some monasteries have 300+ steps.
Check monastery closing schedule - each has different closing day. Monday and Tuesday most common. Great Meteoron closed Tuesday.
Bring a scarf or long skirt for entry. Cover-ups available at entrance but quality varies. Photography inside monasteries often restricted.
Rent a car for flexibility - roads are good and scenic. Free parking at each monastery. Drive carefully on winding mountain roads.
Stay in Kastraki village for atmosphere - closer to rocks than Kalambaka. Good hotels and tavernas. Kalambaka has more options and train station.
Book train tickets in advance on Trainose during peak season. Trains fill up quickly. Direct train from Athens takes about 4 hours.
Try local Greek cuisine: moussaka, souvlaki, Greek salad, tzatziki. Local wine excellent. Tavernas in Kastraki have great views.
