Useful tips for visiting Managua
Head to Granada immediately - 45 min from airport, much better base. Colonial UNESCO city, Mombacho volcano, islets. Managua is hub, not destination. Shuttles run constantly. Don't waste time in capital.
Use Uber exclusively - never local buses or unmarked taxis. Safety first in Managua. Cheap rides, peace of mind. Download before arriving. City sprawled - impossible to walk between areas.
If staying - visit Plaza de la Revolución, old cathedral ruins, Loma de Tiscapa (Sandino silhouette). Revolutionary history interesting. Daytime only. With guide preferred. Managua has history if you look.
Try gallo pinto (rice & beans - national breakfast), nacatamal, vigorón, quesillo, Toña beer, Flor de Caña rum (excellent!). Nicaraguan food simple but tasty. Very affordable eating. Mall food courts safest option.
