Travel Tips
Useful tips for visiting Lombok
Getting to Gilis: Fast boats from Senggigi/Teluk Nara (30min, 85,000-150,000 IDR), public boats from Bangsal port (cheaper but slow, 50,000 IDR). Also fast boats from Bali (2-3 hours). Book return on arrival.
Rinjani treks 2025: 2D/1N from $120, 3D/2N from $180. Includes guide, porter, tent, food, park fees. Book through Senaru or Sembalun. Dry season April-November essential. Bring warm layers - freezing at summit!
Rent scooter 70,000-80,000 IDR/day. International license technically required but rarely checked. Roads good on main routes, bad in south. Helmet mandatory. Fuel stations rare outside towns - carry extra.
Gili Islands: NO motorized vehicles, NO ATMs (bring cash or pay card fees), NO cars. Get around by foot, bicycle (rent 50,000 IDR/day), or cidomo (horse cart). Island hopping boats between all 3 Gilis, 35,000 IDR.
Best season: May-October (dry). Wet season Nov-March brings afternoon rains but lower prices. Rinjani closed Jan-March. Shoulder months (April, November) offer good balance. Gilis good year-round.
Kuta Lombok surf spots: Selong Belanak (beginners), Tanjung Aan (mellow), Gerupuk Bay (5 breaks for all levels, boat access). Boards rent from 100,000 IDR/day. Surf camps from $30-50/night including lessons.
Diving on Gilis: world-class sites, turtles guaranteed, underwater sculptures on Meno. PADI Open Water from $350. Fun dives from $35. Visibility best March-November. Don't fly within 24 hours of diving.
Food: Sasak cuisine - ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken), plecing kangkung (water spinach), sate pusut. Cheaper than Bali everywhere. Gili's slightly pricier. Beachfront seafood BBQ 50,000-100,000 IDR. Bintang beer 25,000 IDR.
