Hourly trains from Budapest Déli station. Siófok (south) ~1.5h, Balatonfüred (north) ~2h, Keszthely (west) ~2.5h. Tickets ~2500-4000 HUF. Buses also from Népliget. Can reach northern tip in 50 min
Most public beaches are free, especially on south shore (Zamárdi, Balatonlelle). Some private beaches charge 500-1500 HUF entry with extra facilities (chairs, showers, lockers). Hotels often have private beaches for guests
Europe's largest natural thermal lake, 6 km from Keszthely. Water warm year-round (23-36°C), even in winter you can swim surrounded by steam! Famous for healing properties. Entry ~4000-6000 HUF
Useful tips for visiting Lake Balaton
Book accommodation well in advance for July-August, especially during Balaton Sound festival. Prices can double in peak season
Try fogas (pike-perch) — famous local fish from the lake. Available at most lakeside restaurants
Use ferries for crossing between shores — cheaper and more scenic than train around the lake
The 200 km bike path around the lake is flat and beginner-friendly. Bike rentals available in every town
Visit Tihany Peninsula for stunning views and 11th century abbey. One of the most beautiful areas in the region
North shore wines are excellent — try Badacsony and Badacsonytomaj regions. Wine trails free to explore
