Useful tips for visiting Kota Kinabalu
Use Grab instead of regular taxis. Drivers don't use meters and overcharge. Grab is cheaper and more transparent.
Book Mount Kinabalu climb 2-3 months ahead. Spots are very limited (130 people/day) and waiting lists are long.
Carry rain gear year-round. Even in dry season, sudden tropical afternoon showers are common.
Apply high-SPF sunscreen! UV index in Kota Kinabalu is 12 (maximum level) year-round.
Visit Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park islands early morning. Sea is calmer, fewer tourists, and better underwater visibility.
Try fresh seafood at Filipino Market. Choose your fresh catch and they cook it for RM 5-10 per dish cooking fee.
Carry enough cash. Small shops, markets, and stalls don't accept cards. ATMs are available in shopping malls.
