June-October (long dry season) and late December-early March (short dry season). Best months: January, February, September. Avoid April-May (heavy rains). September is driest month.
7-8 days recommended for proper acclimatization and best summit success rate. Minimum 5-6 days possible but higher risk of altitude sickness. Popular routes: Machame (6-7 days), Lemosho (7-8 days), Marangu (5-6 days).
No technical climbing required. Good fitness and endurance training recommended. Expect 5-7 hours hiking daily. Mental preparation important. Summit night is challenging: 12+ hours, extreme cold, altitude.
Travel Tips
Useful tips for visiting Kilimanjaro
Book through a licensed tour operator. All climbs require certified guides and park fees. Solo climbing is not allowed.
Climb slowly - 'pole pole' (Swahili). Acclimatization is key to summit success. Drink 3-4 liters water daily.
Pack proper cold weather gear. Summit temperatures can drop to -20C (-4F). Layers essential. Rent gear in Moshi if needed.
Tipping crew is expected. Budget $250-400 per climber for 6-8 day trek. Split between guides ($50-80), assistant guides ($40-50), porters ($8-10 each), cook ($30-40).
