Yes, tickets must be booked online in advance. Select date and time slot when booking. Online price (21.50 EUR) is cheaper than at gate (25 EUR).
Mid-April to early May is best. Avoid April 18 (flower parade), Easter weekend, and April 27 (King's Day) - these are extremely crowded.
Take KeukenhofBuzz bus 852 from Amsterdam Central. Or train to Hoofddorp then bus 859. Combi-ticket (bus + entry) around 40 EUR.
