Beach towns Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk are 40 min by train. Great summer day trips.
Kaliningrad is exclave - surrounded by EU (Poland, Lithuania). No land connection to Russia.
Try local smoked fish (especially eel) and Königsberger Klopse (German-style meatballs).
Cathedral on Kant Island has Kant's tomb. Beautiful organ concerts in evenings.
