Holguín is Cuba's fourth-largest city, but tourists know it as the gateway to Guardalavaca and Playa Pesquero beaches. It's an alternative to Varadero: fewer crowds, wilder beaches, closer to eastern Cuba. If you want to combine beach time with trips to Santiago or Baracoa—Holguín is your choice.
Beaches: Why People Come
Guardalavaca
The region's main beach—3 km of white sand, coral reef for snorkeling, calm turquoise water. Smaller and cozier than Varadero, more authentic. There are casas and local restaurants—you can stay outside resorts.
Playa Esmeralda
"Emerald Beach"—the water really is green. Enclosed by rocks on both sides, almost no waves. Perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Several hotels nearby.
Playa Pesquero
The region's most "luxurious" beach—whitest sand, clearest water, several 5-star hotels. If you want a good all-inclusive in a non-touristy spot—this is it.
Activities
— Snorkeling and diving—reefs near shore, cave dive sites
— Swimming with dolphins—Bahia de Naranjo, open-sea dolphinarium
— Chorro de Maíta Archaeological Museum—aboriginal burial site, 200+ skeletons
— Las Guanas eco-trails—cave petroglyphs
Holguín City
Tourists usually skip the city itself, but it's pleasant. Several squares with colonial churches, Loma de la Cruz hill with city panorama (465 steps up). If you're stuck for a day before the beach—there's things to do.
Getting There
Frank País International Airport receives direct flights from Canada and Europe. Transfer to beaches takes 40-60 minutes.
Convenient starting point for eastern Cuba route: Holguín → Santiago → Baracoa.
Where to Stay
Beach hotels: all-inclusive, like everywhere in Cuba. Iberostar, Memories, Playa Pesquero—good options.
In Guardalavaca: casas and local apartments—cheaper and more authentic. Beach is public, not just for hotel guests.
How Much Time
Week at the beach: typical format—fly in, tan, fly out.
3-4 days + eastern Cuba: if combining with Santiago and Baracoa.
Practical Tips
— Beaches less hyped than Varadero—slightly lower prices
— Guardalavaca is open to everyone, not just hotel guests
— Cash only
— Book water activities through hotels
