Castle is very close to station - 15 min walk via Otemae Street. Bus is optional. Great views walking down the main street.

Combine castle ticket with Kokoen Gardens - beautiful Japanese gardens right next to castle. Worth the extra fee.
Cable car to Engyo-ji Temple runs every 15 min. Temple was filming location for 'The Last Samurai'.
Try local oden - Himeji is known for light soy broth with ginger. Also famous for anago (conger eel).
