Late March - early April for cherry blossoms (over 1000 trees!), or November for autumn colors. Visit early morning to avoid crowds.
From March 2026: 1000 yen for Japan residents, 2500 yen for foreign visitors. Kokoen Gardens separate 1500 yen.
Half day is sufficient (3-4 hours) for castle and gardens. Full day to add Engyo-ji Temple on Mt. Shosha.
Shinkansen 30 minutes (covered by JR Pass). Regular JR trains about 1 hour. Sanyo Railway from Umeda also available.
Yes, Himeji is very safe. Quiet smaller city with low crime rate. Just keep an eye on belongings in crowded areas.
Travel Tips
Useful tips for visiting Himeji
Castle is very close to station - 15 min walk via Otemae Street. Bus is optional. Great views walking down the main street.
Arrive at castle by 9am to avoid crowds. Up to 50,000 visitors per day during cherry blossom season!
Combine castle ticket with Kokoen Gardens - beautiful Japanese gardens right next to castle. Worth the extra fee.
Cable car to Engyo-ji Temple runs every 15 min. Temple was filming location for 'The Last Samurai'.
Try local oden - Himeji is known for light soy broth with ginger. Also famous for anago (conger eel).
