faq.subtitle Great Smoky Mountains
Yes! Great Smoky Mountains is one of the few national parks with no entrance fee. This makes it America's most visited national park with over 12 million visitors annually
October for fall foliage, mid-April to May for wildflowers. June-October are busiest with 1M+ monthly visitors. Winter is quiet but some roads close
Gatlinburg (5 min from entrance) for closest access. Pigeon Forge (20 min) for more options & entertainment like Dollywood. Townsend for quieter experience. Cherokee for North Carolina side access
Highly recommended. Local trolleys serve Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge towns but do not go into the park. Scenic drives like Cades Cove Loop and Newfound Gap Road are main attractions
Useful tips for visiting Great Smoky Mountains
Avoid October weekends - peak fall foliage season with extreme crowds. Arrive before 8AM on weekdays for best experience
Cades Cove Loop closes to cars every Wednesday May-September - perfect for cycling the 11-mile scenic road
Watch for black bears - keep 50 yards distance, never feed them. Use bear-resistant containers for food. Most active at dawn/dusk
No cell phone signal in most of the park - download offline maps before entering. GPS may not work on some trails
Clingmans Dome (highest point at 6,643 ft) road closes December-March. Access requires steep half-mile uphill walk to observation tower
