Real risk at 5,897m summit. Spend several days in Quito (2,850m) first for acclimatization. Do warm-up hikes to Rucu Pichincha (~4,700m) and Illinizas Norte. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol. Allow 1 week minimum in Andes before summit attempt.
Limpiopungo Lake (easy): Flat terrain, great for beginners/families, beautiful volcano reflections. Parking to Jose Rivas Refuge (moderate-hard): Steep at 4,850m, reaches glacier edge. Summit climb (very difficult): Technical, requires crampons/ice axe, night start.
Volcano was closed Oct 2022 - early 2024 due to activity. Now reopened with monitoring. ~8,000 earthquakes recorded Oct 2022 - Feb 2023. Always verify current conditions with local authorities before climbing. Summit access may be restricted.
Dry season June-September best for climbing. August ideal for photography (clear skies, bright snow). December-February secondary good period. Avoid March-May (wettest), September-November (rainy/snowy).
Useful tips for visiting Cotopaxi
Bring layers - weather changes rapidly. Waterproof GORE-TEX jacket essential, wool/synthetic clothing (NOT cotton), glacier glasses with side protection. Down jacket (600+ fill) for summit.
Train 4-6 weeks before trip (cardio focus). Summit attempts usually start at midnight (12-1 AM) to reach top at sunrise and descend before afternoon storms.
For acclimatization: Do warm-up hikes to Rucu Pichincha (~4,700m), Illinizas Norte (~5,126m), Pasochoa (~4,200m), or Rumiñahui (~4,722m). Progress gradually from 9,000 to 15,000 ft.
