Fly to Chihuahua (CUU) or Los Mochis (LMM) airports, then take El Chepe train. Most travelers start from Los Mochis heading east for best lighting. Flight + overnight in El Fuerte before boarding is recommended.
Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) are ideal. Summer is very rainy. Winter is cold with possible snow in Creel. Waterfall season is after rains (Sept-Oct). Each season offers different beauty.
ZipRider zipline at Divisadero (world's 2nd longest at 2.5km), hiking, mountain biking, ATV tours, and rafting (at right water levels). Horseback riding and rock climbing also available.
Indigenous people of the region (call themselves Raramuri), famous for ultra-distance running abilities. They sell handcrafts and baskets. Respect their culture and ask permission before photographing.
Useful tips for visiting Copper Canyon
Book El Chepe train tickets in advance during peak season (December-April, school holidays). They sell out quickly. Official site: chepe.mx.
Bring layers - temperatures can range from 5-25C on the same day between rim and canyon floor. Nights are cold year-round at altitude.
Creel is the main base - charming Pueblo Magico town with hotels, restaurants, and access to most attractions. Plan 2-3 nights minimum.
Bring enough cash - ATMs are limited in Creel and many places don't accept cards. Withdraw in Chihuahua or Los Mochis before arrival.
Stop at Divisadero (train stops 15 min) for the best canyon views from the observation platform. The zipline is also here.
Buy Tarahumara crafts directly - baskets, dolls, violins, drums. Fair prices support local communities. Available at train stops and Creel plaza.
