Travel Tips
Useful tips for visiting Bukhara
Entry tickets 2025: most sites 40,000-60,000 som (~$3-5). Ark Fortress ~100,000 som (~$8). Kalyan Mosque is FREE! Budget ~$15-20 for all major attractions.
High-speed Afrosiab train from Samarkand: 1.5 hours, from $8. From Tashkent: 4 hours. Book at uzrailway.uz. Night train to Khiva also available (uncomfortable but scenic).
Old town is compact - all major sites within 15-20 min walk. No need for taxi inside. Get lost in the alleys - you'll always find your way back to Lyab-i Hauz.
Summer (June-August) brutally hot (38-42°C). Visit monuments early (8-11am) and late (5-8pm). Midday retreat to chaikhana or hotel. Spring (April-May) and autumn (Sept-Oct) ideal.
For Russians: MIR cards work at some banks and ATMs. Visa/Mastercard from Russian banks don't work. Bring USD cash - excellent exchange rate at bazaars and exchange points.
Dinner at Lyab-i Hauz is magical - tables by the ancient pool, traditional music, shashlik and plov. Try Minzifa or Doston House. Reservations recommended for sunset spots.
Carpet buying: Bukhara carpets world-famous but negotiate hard (start at 30-40% of asking price). Get certificate for customs. Suzani embroidery makes lighter souvenirs.
Stay in traditional boutique hotels in old town - converted madrasas and merchant houses. From $30-80/night with breakfast. Atmosfera, Sasha & Son, Minor Hotel recommended.
