Cash legally required to be accepted since October 2024 (businesses risk fines from May 2025 for refusal), but Norway remains virtually cashless economy in practice. Lowest cash usage in Europe - only 6% of value, 11% of point-of-sale transactions. Everything payable by methods other than cash in Bergen. Shops, restaurants, even farmers selling produce prefer non-cash methods. Recent travelers used other methods everywhere, even for small purchases like gelato at Fish Market. While legally required, cash never needed or appreciated in practice.
FOREX BANK at Strandkaien 2B (across from Tourist Information at Fish Market) specializes in currency exchange. Ria Money Transfer in heart of Bergen (front of Fish Market) with extended hours Mon-Sat. Norges Bank offices in Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø (note: exchanges withdrawn Norwegian notes only, not foreign currency). ATMs widespread and widely accepted. Avoid airport/hotel exchanges - poor rates and high fees. Check for bank partnerships to avoid ATM fees. Norway very cash-averse - most places prefer other payment methods.
Service included. Tipping not expected but 10% appreciated for exceptional service.
