faq.subtitle Abuja

Most need visa - apply at embassy or e-visa online. Tourist visa ~$160, 90 days. Process can be bureaucratic. ECOWAS citizens visa-free. Visa on arrival for some business travelers with approval. Plan ahead.

Abuja: planned, calm, safe, green. Lagos: chaotic, energetic, overwhelming, 'real Nigeria'. Abuja for government, diplomacy, easier introduction. Lagos for business, culture, Afrobeats, beaches. Different experiences entirely.

Abuja reasonably safe - government district secure. Avoid flashy displays of wealth. Check current situation (some regions have security issues). Use trusted transport. Nigeria complex - research specific areas. Most business travelers fine.

Massive 400m monolith overlooking Abuja. Presidential Complex at base (Nigerian White House). Symbol of Nigerian power. Can't enter complex but visible throughout city. Impressive backdrop to capital.

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Abuja

Visit Zuma Rock - massive 725m monolith 1 hour from Abuja. 'Gateway to Abuja' with face-like formation. Sacred to locals. On Naira notes. Viewpoint and photos. Combine with Gurara Falls if time.

National Mosque and National Church - both impressive modern architecture. Nigeria split Muslim north/Christian south. Both welcome visitors with modest dress. Unique to see both within planned capital.

Use Uber/Bolt - safer and easier. Cash is king - bring USD to exchange. Multiple exchange rates exist - use official channels. Nigeria's economy complex - ask locals for advice on payments.

Try jollof rice (Nigerian version!), suya (spiced grilled meat), egusi soup, pounded yam, pepper soup. Nigerian food hearty and spicy. Nkwobi, kilishi for adventurous. Food cheap and flavorful.
